EDUCATION AWARDS ASSESSMENT
  Education Awards
Applications are sought once a year, closing on 31 March (or the next business day if that is holiday).
In addition to our own awards, we have a Memorandum of Understanding with Victoria University of Wellington whereby it matches whatever a VUW attendee receives from us.
The eligibility terms and other conditions are on the website: https://morikau.com/trust/education/
We have four Education Awards with the Post-graduate and Under-graduate Scholarships funded directly by Morikaunui Incorporation and the other by the trust itself.
Assessment imperatives
The lead role in the assessment process is undertaken by an independent person with no known direct connections to any trustees or applications.  That person would defer to a trustee assisting in the process if such a conflict arose.

All applicants must have completed their application forms correctly and provide the information sought to be eligible for consideration.  While the forms state that there will be no requests for additional information, if the office has time, applicants may be contacted and given the opportunity to rectify any outstanding issues.  If an applicant includes a letter/note that there is an outstanding issue and why it has arisen, they will be given time to resolve it.  Such a concession will be determined on a case by case basis.
In assessing the Under-graduate applications, priority should be given to those having completed at least a successful first year.  It is up to the Assessor to make (an)exception(s).

Post-graduate scholarship (one per year)
All applicants must be in full-time study for the Post-graduate degree or diploma. This is valued at $5,000 for one year but the recipient is eligible to apply for a second year if it is a two year undertaking.
It is only open to Post-graduate applicants with an Undergraduate degree as the prerequisite. [This excludes MBA's that has no academic prerequisite.]
Under-graduate Scholarships (eight current each year, incl roll-overs)
All applicants must be in full-time study for the full years for an Under-graduate degree to be funded.
This is $1,000 pa for up to three years. The follow-on awards (referred to as Roll overs), are subject to a 100% pass rate the previous year.
Assessment criteria
Preference is given to applicants who have shown first year success.  In the absence of sufficient second or subsequent year applicants, first year attendees can be considered with preference given to those with the highest NCEA/equivalent awards.

In the case of the Post-graduate awards, a prior year recipient who is eligible for consideration in the current year, is to be assessed as if this is their first application.
Roll-overs
Those awarded an Under-graduate Scholarship who have two or more years of study will be entitled to a Roll-over for a maximum of another 2 years of full-time study. They must provide their results (showing passes in all subjects), proof of enrolment and proof of payment for the forthcoming year by 31 March.
The Whanganui Trust Scholarships
These are two awards worth $2,500 per year (although the Farming/Trade scholarship may to divided in two).

If in the view of the Assessor there are no worthy applicants, the funds are added to the Education Grant / Year 13 pool!
Agri-Business Scholarship
Applicants can be undertaking any degree and in at least their second year, having had a 100% pass rate the prior year. To be eligible, an applicant must to enrolled for a paper as part of their Under-graduate degree at level 2 or above with an agriculture/ farming/ land based focus. It is for one year @ $2,500 with recipients entitled to apply in subsequent years provided they have passed all their papers the year before and are enrolled in another qualifying paper.
Farming or Trade Scholarship
This is for anyone undertaking an NZQA approved vocational course of no less than one year either in conjunction with an apprenticeship or not. The award is up to $2,500 for one year with recipients entitled to apply in subsequent years provided they have passed all their papers the year before.  The award may be shared by no more than two applicants at the discretion of the Assessor.
Education Grants
These are for all the unsuccessful scholarship applicants eligible for consideration, as well as those having applied for the grants.  They are up to $500 each. The funding pool is $22,500 pa.
Year 13 Grant
These are for students in Year 13 and is up to $250 each. The funding pool is $6,250 pa.
Grants funding
The mechanics for the funding of the above grants are thus: Any unallocated funds from the trust scholarships are added to the grants pool.  That sum is divided by the total number of grant applicants plus half the number of Year 13 applicants (because the award is half).  The result is the Education grant payment of which 50% is the Year 13 payment.
